Tracking Progress: How to Know If Your Rehab Is Working
Sometimes we'll have patients that come in after a few visits thinking they haven’t made much progress in their rehab. Early on in our careers we may have been a little more startled by those comments, but as with anything, years of experience later we now look at that comment as a teaching moment, a time to ask some follow up questions.
Having a through initial evaluation is key to having the right follow up questions, we will have a solid baseline of information from day 1. We will know about how you were feeling, the limitations you had, the goals you wanted to achieve, some objective measurements we can track, etc... we can now use those data points as comparison as we discuss what concerns you are feeling. With a thorough initial assessment, it makes tracking progress and making better decisions that much easier to get the best results!
Some common questions we might meet you with are...
Is there improved movement and mobility? (this could come from you knowing it, or measurements we've documented)
Are you exercising more often?
Are you lifting more weight/not avoiding movements?
Are you running further/faster?
Is there less pain with exercise or after?
Are you getting better sleep?
Are symptoms less?
Do symptoms ease in less time?
Do you feel more confident?
Most of the time, these simple things get overlooked, clients feel like they need to have this complete 180 turn in their rehab to think the work being put in is doing anything... but that is far from the truth! We know that small progress consistently over time will pay off in dividends in the long run.
Once we start to ask these questions our clients start to realize they really are doing more than they thought, and we want to be some of the first to cheer you on! Take pride in the small wins, and know we always have your back!
At Evolv we stand by our Reset, Restore, Reload process where we work on first find where the pain is coming from and work on decreasing it from day 1. Then we start to address the root cause (usually a flexibility, mobility, or strength plan), and then we reload - getting you back to what you want to do with a stronger baseline.
